& Cumbe Mayo
Cerro Santa Apolonia
Looking south from the Plaza de Armas,
your eyes will immediately be drawn to
the pretty white church on the hill of
Cerro Santa Apolonia , and the large
crucifix looming behind it. The walk up
Jr. 2 de Mayo is steep but there's plenty
to see on the way - the undulating steps
are filled with amorous couples, children
playing and people making jewellery and
other crafts. At the church, you can pay
S1 (daily 7am-6pm) to go right to the
top through pretty gardens, and see the
rock formation known as the Silla del Inca
(Inca chair), reputed to be a place the
Inca King would sit and gaze out over
his empire.
Tues-Sat 9am-1pm & 3-6pm, Sun
9am-1pm). The most famous is the only
surviving Inca structure in Cajamarca - a
modest stone room known as El Cuarto del
Rescate (the ransom room), at Jr. Amalia
Puga 722. It is the room, legend has it, that
Atahualpa was forced by the conquistadors
to fill with gold in order to save his life,
although in reality it is probably just the
room in which he was held prisoner.
The joint ticket also includes entrance
to the gorgeous Baroque Complejo Belén .
This complex includes two colonial
hospitals - one now an archeology and
ethnography museum, and the other
a large space with small alcoves that would
have been the patients' beds, which now
hosts rotating art exhibitions - that sit
either side of the Iglesia Belén , on the
corner of Calle Belén and Jr. Junín. The
church is the most attractive in Cajamarca,
worth seeing for its ornate carved interiors
and painted chubby angels. The hospitals

tourist office in the Belén Complex) gives
