AROUND CHICLAYO
There are several sites around Chiclayo
that are definitely worth seeing, all
offered on organized tours, though it can
get confusing as some sites have several
names, while different places have similar
names. The most easily confused are
Sipán , where remains from the Moche
culture were discovered, and the Sicán
(or Lambayeque) culture. Add to the mix
the fact that several Sipán sites are located
in the town of Lambayeque and it all
becomes too much. Save to say that the
sights below are essential viewing, but be
warned - there are many, many more.
Details are given on how to get to the
sights independently, but it will be easier
and cheaper to go with a tour company.

Tumbas Reales in Lambayeque (see
below) were discovered. There's a small
museum documenting the digs, but it is
best combined with a visit to the larger
museum. It's fascinating to think that
there's still so much more to be found.
To get to Sipán , take a combi from the
Terminal EPSEL on Avenida Nicolás de
Piérola in Chiclayo (45min; S2.50).
Lambayeque museums
The treasures from the Huaca Rajada's
multiple tombs are displayed at the
world-class Museo Tumbas Reales de
Sipán in Lambayeque (Av Juan Pablo
Vizcardo y Guzmán; Tues-Sun 9am-5pm;
S10; W museotumbasrealessipan.pe).
Although the museum is quite an eyesore
from the outside, it is impossible to do
justice to the wonders within. The hauls
from the various digs are laid out as
they were discovered, and there are an
overwhelming number of sacred objects
all intricately made from precious metals,
shells and stones.
he Bruning National Archeology
Museum , also in Lambayeque (Parque
Infantil; daily 9am-5pm; S8; T 074 282
110), contains displays on all Peru's
ancient cultures and spans five millennia.
Housed in a modernist building, the
collection is displayed over four floors
Huaca Rajada
The Moche culture (100-800 AD) was
based all along the coast in northern
Peru. The tombs found at the Huaca
Rajada in Sipán (site museum daily
9am-5pm; S8) are vital to Moche history,
as unlike the huacas near Trujillo, they
were never plundered by treasure hunters.
Excavation began in 1987 and continues
to this day. Walk around the site to see
the archeologists at work and the real
tombs, where the extraordinary treasures
now mostly displayed at the Museo
