The only real point of interest in
town is the
Mercado Modelo
- a good
general market, but if you turn left on
Arica, walk another block and enter
where you see the plants outside,
you'll reach the
witches' market
. Here
the stalls sell shaman's tools, elixirs,
swords, taxidermied snakes and voodoo
aids. Avoid the northern end of the
market as it's seedy, and watch out
for pickpockets.

The Plaza de Armas, or
Parque Principal
, is
still very much the centre of Chiclayan life,
with the huge commercial Avenue Balta
running north to the fascinating witches'
market and south to the main bus stations.
