CAPILLA DEL MONTE
CAPILLA DEL MONTE attracts more
alternative lifestyle-types in summer
than you can shake an incense stick at.
Situated 102km north of Córdoba city,
the idyllic mountain town lies at the base
of Cerro Uriturco , which, at 1979m, is the
Sierra Chica's highest peak and is claimed
by many locals to possess an inexplicable
magnetic pull.
Set at the confluence of two (often dry)
rivers on the northern edge of the Punilla
Valley, Capilla del Monte's former glory
can be glimpsed in its slowly decaying
nineteenth-century mansions. Artisans
and New Age healers are the town's
more conspicuous residents, and their
businesses can be easily visited using
the maps and listings provided by the
tourist office.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Capilla del Monte makes a good base for
outdoor adventure sports, including
horseriding in the surrounding
countryside, rock climbing the strange
sandstone formations around the hamlet
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE
Capilla del Monte hosts an international UFO convention every November, organized
by local “research” group Centro de Informes OVNI, Juan Cabus 297 ( T 03548 482485,
W ciouritorco.org - OVNI is Spanish for UFO). Mystical tourism is gaining in popularity,
with local tour operators jumping on the extraterrestrial bandwagon by offering guided tours
to sites of supposed UFO landings as well as night excursions to observe celestial happenings
on remote mountaintops. You'll be in good hands with Viajes Ángel ( T 03548 15 634 532),
Diagonal Buenos Aires 183, which does a (fairly) convincing range of otherworldly tours.
