around S25, or you can get a bus, which leaves every
20min from Av Del Aeropuerto at a stop called “El Cruce”
(10-15min walk from aiport), for around S1.50. You can
also take a taxi direct to Huanchaco from the airport for S10.
By bus Most of the buses have terminals close to the
centre of town near the Mansiche Stadium, southwest of it
on Av Daniel Carrión or Av España, or east of it along
Ejército. If you decide to stay in Huanchaco you'll have to
return to Trujillo to get an onward connection. Note that
some companies have two terminals: one for buses north
and the other south.
Destinations Cajamarca (9 daily; 6hr); Chachapoyas
(1 daily; 13hr); Chiclayo (every half hour; 4hr); Huaraz
(4 daily; 9hr); Lima (hourly; 8hr); Máncora (6 daily; 7hr);
Tumbes (7 daily; 10hr). Ormeño runs buses from Trujillo
straight to Quito in Ecuador (2 weekly; 30hr; US$85) or to
Guayaquil, Ecuador, via Piura, Máncora and Tumbes (daily;
18hr; US$55).
By combi and taxi Combis cannot enter within
Av España, but if you walk to this boundary you can find
one to most places. If you're arriving by day it's fine to
walk to the city centre, though at night it's best to take
a taxi (around S3.50 for a ride within Trujillo, S15 to
Huanchaco, S25 to the airport). Navy blue and white
coloured combis go to Huanchaco. Of the taxi companies,
Tico Taxi ( T 044 282 828) and Tele Taxi ( T 044 694 747)
are two recommended by iPerú.

EATING
There's no shortage of restaurants in Trujillo. Jr. Pizarro has
a huge assortment of cafés and a Metro supermarket at
number 700. A speciality of the area is seafood, which is
probably best appreciated on the beach at the nearby
resort of Huanchaco (see below).
Ì Café Bar El Museo Jr. Independencia, at Jr. Junín
T 044 324 374. In the same building as the Museo del
Juguete, this plush café-bar with an old-world vibe is
cluttered with posters and features a saloon bar. The menu
is limited to sandwiches (S10-14), coffee, juices and
alcohol but it's worth it for the atmosphere alone (expect
an ever-so-cool jazz soundtrack). There's also a small art
gallery in an adjoining room. Mon-Sat 9am-midnight.
Cevichería Mar Adentro Jr. Diego de Almagro 311. Look
for the sample plates of food on a pavement table and
then follow the passageway to a bright, large room with
cheap ceviche , as well as other classic Peruvian dishes.
Ceviche S6, set lunch S4. Daily 10am-4.30pm.
Mixturas Jr. de Orbegoso 319 T 044 205 946. This café-
bar serves good Peruvian snacks - try the fried yucca (S4)
- and is decorated with colourful local artworks. There's
a relaxing garden to escape from Trujillo's busy centre. Set
lunch S12. Mon-Sat 8am-11pm.
Pepe's Jr. Ayacucho 214. This basic place packed with
locals only does evening meals and it only does meat, but
it does it well; the steak is wonderful. All mains under
S13.50. Mon-Sat 6-11pm.
Restaurant Romano Jr. Pizarro 747 T 044 252 251.
Small, friendly restaurant specializing in Peruvian and
Italian dishes. Good-sized portions and tasty food make
this a popular place. Mains S15. Daily 8am-11pm.
El Rincón de Vallejo Jr. Orbegoso 303 T 044 476 628.
Cesar Vallejo, Peru's most famous poet, was brought up in
the house next door to this cramped and characterful
corner café. Really good criollo food that couldn't be
cheaper, so predictably this place gets packed and rushed
at lunch. Set menu S6.90-8.90. Mon-Sat 7am-3pm &
5-11pm, Sun 7am-3pm.
ACCOMMODATION
The majority of Trujillo's hotels are within a few blocks of
the central Plaza Mayor; however, there are surprisingly few
good-value hotels for a city this size. Many people prefer to
stay in the nearby (11km north) bohemian beach resort of
Huanchaco (see opposite), which has a much wider variety of
accommodation, including some good budget options.
Casa de Clara Jr. Cahuide 495 T 044 299 997.
Jr. Orbegoso in the centre becomes Jr. Huayna Capac,
where at about the fifth block there's a little green space,
on one side of which is this hostel (it's around a 10min
walk from the centre). Hot show ers, w i-fi and spacious
rooms in a place with a family feel. S30
Ì Hostal Colonial Jr. Independencia 618 T 044 268
261, W hostalcolonial.com.pe. A central place where some
English is spoken - the highlight here is the stunning
colonial building. Rooms are cosy and come with TV, plus
there's internet, a patio and a café that does a dec ent b reak-
fast. Also has a cheap tour agency and taxi service. S90
