GETTING AROUND
Av Luzuriaga is the north-south axis of the town centre,
where most of the restaurants, nightlife and tour operators
are based. Much of Huaraz town can be negotiated on foot
once you've acclimatized to the altitude; however, some
of the more remote sectors around the urban area should
not be walked alone at night.
By taxi
For short journeys within the city, the best option
is to use one of the regular
taxi colectivos
that run on
fixed routes along Av Luzuriaga and Av Centenario (S0.80).
A taxi ride anywhere in the city should not cost more than
S3-4.50. Companies include Phono Taxi (043 428 800) and
Taxi Plus (043 792 111).
here's an easy day trek (7km; 3hr)
from Huaraz to the remains of a Wari
mausoleum,
Wilcawain
(Mon-Sat
9am-5pm & Sun 9am-2pm; S5). From
here there's a non-covered road that
leads to the nearby thermal springs at
Monterrey
, a relaxing afternoon. Be sure
to check details with the tourist office
before you go, as attacks on tourists have
been reported on this route.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By plane
LC Perú operates daily flights from Lima.
The small airstrip is close to the village of Anta, some
23km north of Huaraz; a 30min ride into the city by
combi
(S2.50).
By bus
Most bus companies have terminals a street or
two from the main drag of Av Luzuriaga on Jr. Comercio
which becomes Jr. Lucar y Torre.
Destinations
Lima (18 daily; 8hr); Chimbote (3 daily; 7hr);
Trujillo (4 daily; 9hr).
