In-Depth Information
(daily 8am-6pm; admission by
donations; T 051 369 604, W yavari.org)
is the oldest working single-propellor iron
ship in existence. In 1862, the 2766
pieces of the ship were transported from
the Peruvian coast on the backs of mules
and llamas, many of whom perished
during the trip, and with the help of
eight thousand men the Yavari was
reconstructed on Lake Titicaca. Yavari
started life as a Peruvian navy gunship
but ended up rusting on the lake's shores
after being decommissioned. In 1982,
Englishwoman Meriel Larkin formed the
Yavari Project in a bid to save it. The
project aims to repair the ship sufficiently
to make it possible to take trips around
the lake on it by 2015. Guests can stay
on board in beautiful wooden cabins for
US$45 a night, inclusive of breakfast.
