El Horno Av 22 de Agosto s/n. Only open for dinner,
this place attracts locals and tourists alike who both get
happily involved in the daily peña shows. Choose from
pizza, international and local dishes. The set menu will set
you back S25, or opt for the à la carte menu if the former
doesn't tickle your fancy. Daily 6-10pm.
Urinsaya Francisco Bolognesi 1026. Serving one of the
best all-you-can-eat lunchtime buffets (S25), the grub
here includes a variety of hearty soups, as well as fish and
meat dishes. Daily 11am-3pm.

on the same day, it's far more rewarding
to either camp or stay in one of the
basic huts at Sangalle; each campsite has
its own swimming pool.
Another popular route is Cabanaconde-
San Juan de Chuccho-Coshñirhua-
Malata-Sangalle Oasis (approx 6hr).
However, between San Juan de Chuccho
and Coshñirhua thick vegetation at times
covers the path, and smaller diverging
trails can be confusing. You might lose
your way temporarily before joining the
main path again.
It is strongly advised to tackle all
other routes with a guide, in particular
given that there have been reported
accidents and even deaths of tourists
who have ventured off unaccompanied
into the canyon.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By bus There are several daily departures to Arequipa
(6hr) via Chivay (2hr 30min).
Cabanaconde
An attractive village in the heart of the
canyon, surrounded by Inca terracing,
CABANACONDE makes an excellent base
for hiking down into the canyon.
Follow fellow hikers through the fields
to a steep trail leading down to Sangalle
Oasis - a splotch of blue and green
amid parched scenery. Halfway down,
the path splits in two; take the
right-hand turn, which leads to the
