El Sol and Calle Santa Domingo rises
imposingly but rudely from the
impressive walls of the Q'orikancha
complex (Mon-Sat 8am-5pm; S10),
which the conquistadors laid low to
make way for their uninspiring Baroque
seventeenth-century church. Before the
Spanish set their gold-hungry eyes on it,
the temple must have been even more
breathtaking, consisting of four small
sanctuaries and a larger temple set around
the existing courtyard, which was
encircled by a cornice of gold made of
seven hundred solid gold sheets
(Q'orikancha means “golden enclosure”).
Below the temple was an artificial garden
in which everything was made of gold or
silver and encrusted with precious jewels,
from llamas and shepherds to the tiniest
details of clumps of earth and weeds,
including snails and butterflies. The
Incas used the Q'orikancha as a solar
observatory to study celestial activities,
and archeologists believe that the
mummies of the previous Incas were
brought here and ritually burned.
