WHAT TO SEE AND DO
The heart of the city is the Plaza Mayor,
with its sixteenth- and seventeenth-
century buildings characterized by stone
arches, pillars with balustrades and red
brick clay roofs. The Plaza is home to
the seventeenth-century Catedral , which
combines Renaissance and Baroque
elements. Despite its somewhat sombre
facade, its rich interior is home to ten
beautiful gold-leaf altarpieces.
Visitors should not miss the Museo de
la Memoria (Prolongación Libertad 1229;
Mon-Fri 9am-1pm & 3-6pm, Sun call
in advance; S2; T 066 317 170), which
focuses on the socio-political violence
inflicted by the Shining Path
revolutionary movement in the 1980s
and 90s. The little museum is home
to a number of displays including
photographs of the dead and missing,
as well as artworks on the conflict and
a replica of a torture cell. A wall chart
details the history of ANFASEP, the
non-profit organization that runs the
museum. Mothers and wives of the
deceased and missing meet here regularly
to share their experiences and lend
support to one another. You can purchase
the women's handmade clothes and crafts
in the little shop upstairs.
