One block east of the Plaza, Avenida
Nicolás de Piérola runs towards the
Parque Universitario
, with the grand old
buildings of the first university in the
Americas, San Marcos. The buildings
now house the
Centro Cultural de San
Marcos
(Mon-Sat 9am-1pm & 2-5pm;
free or S5 with guided visit of historic
building;

ccsm-unmsm.edu.pe), the
cultural centre of the modern university,
now sited in Pueblo Libre. It hosts
many interesting talks and events and
also contains a gallery, focusing on
Peruvian folk and contemporary art,
and an archeological and anthropology
museum with rotating exhibits on
different aspects of Peruvian history, as
well as a permanent collection of textiles
and ceramics.

The Jr. de la Unión becomes Jirón Belén
and leads down to the
Plaza Grau
and

Paseo de la República
(also known
as the Vía Expresa), an enormous dual
carriageway that cleaves through the city.
