In-Depth Information
Ì Britannia Pub Cerro Corá 851, between EEUU and
Tacuary W britannia-pub.com. There are two other good
bars on this block of Cerro Corá, but Britannia is the best;
despite being over twenty years old, this British-themed
pub still heaves with Asunceños. Unlike most Asunción
nightspots it's busy on weeknights and the action starts
earlier than elsewhere. 2.5lt “tower of beer” Gs35,000.
Tues-Thurs from 6.30pm, Fri-Sun from 8pm.
Hollywood Dance Independencia Nacional, at Tte.
Fariña W facebook.com/HWDdanceclub. Not Asunción's
only gay club, but certainly the best, with a friendly crowd,
huge dancefloor and cheap drinks to make up for entrance
fee (from Gs25,000 depending on night and if there's
a show). Fri & Sat from 11.30pm.
Kilkenny Malutín, at Av España alongside Paseo
Carmelitas W kilkenny.com.py. Every city must have one,
and this is a typical faux-Irish bar with drunken revelry
guaranteed. Although themey and expensive, good for
the live music, rowdy atmosphere and huge beer menu.
Beer from Gs8000. Daily 6pm-5am.
Ì Planta Alta Caballero 294, at Mcal. Estigarribia.
Hip as anywhere in Berlin, Brooklyn or East London, climb
the stairs to enter a world of modern art (all for sale),
jazz (sometimes live), roaming cats and a legendary roof
terrace with views over Asunción. Gay-friendly. Small
entrance fee depending on live music. Cocktail or pizza
Gs12,000. Mon-Sat 5pm-1am.

SHOPPING
Artesanía The website W artesania.gov.py has a run-
down of arts and crafts by department. Good and high-
quality selection sold at the Turista Róga (see p.696);
cheapest in Asunción is in Mercado 4 (see box, p.696),
clustered inside market close to Pettirossi at Gral. Aquino.
Bookshops Many in and around the Plaza Uruguaya,
but not much in English. Books ( W libreriabooks.com.py),
with one shop in the centre on Mcal. López 3791, at
Dr. Morra, and in Shopping del Sol, Local 154, has a good
variety of English-language titles, including guidebooks
and Paraguay fiction and non-fiction.
Shopping centres Asunción has many “shoppings”
(malls): Shopping del Sol (Av Aviadores del Chaco, cnr Prof.
Delia González; W www.delsol.com.py), the most famous,
will fulfil your every consumer dream.
DAY TRIPS FROM ASUNCIÓN
Respite from Asunción's oppressive heat
is easier than you might imagine, and just
a short distance from the city limits the
buildings clear and the pace of life slows
to a more typically Paraguayan tempo.
The lushness of the area is immediately
striking, a textbook image of fertile
South America. Two of the most
interesting nearby towns are situated on
the cool (but contaminated) waters of
Lago Ypacaraí , a huge lake with attached
national park. Although it's easy (and
cheap) to hop on local buses between
the towns if you speak Spanish (you
can see them both in a day), tours are
available (see p.696).
DIRECTORY
Banks and exchange You can find branches of all the
major banks in Shopping del Sol. In the centre there's 24hr
ATMs at BBVA, Yegros 435, cnr 25 de Mayo; HSBC, J.E.O'Leary
302, cnr Palma; Sudameris Bank, Independencia Nacional
513. The casas de cambio are clustered around Palma and
Aberdi. There's a MaxiCambios in Shopping Asunción Super
Centro at Oliva, cnr 14 de Mayo, as well as in Shopping del
Sol; the chain changes travellers' cheques.
Areguá
A pleasant town full of big old houses
located among the lush hills above the lake,
arty AREGUÁ is noted for its ceramics, but
has drawn all kinds of artists and literary
types over the years. It has a small “ beach
by the lake (a 5min walk down Mcal.
