ACCOMMODATION
Budget accommodation is limited. Solo travellers end up
paying almost as much for single occupancy as for a
double. All accommodation reviewed below has a/c and
en-suite bathrooms.

service and clean, tiled rooms make this place an under-
stated winne r; kit chenettes in some rooms are a bonus for
self-caterers. €78
Le Dronmi 42 Av du Général de Gaulle T 594 317 770,
W ledronmi.com. A nineteenth-century bordello in a previous
incarnation, this is now Cayenne's most stylish hotel, its nine
chic rooms boasting flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes and wi-fi.
Great value for groups and its location is either a boon or a
bane, depending on whether you enjoy living just a short
stagg er up th e stair s from the city's most popular bar. Doubles

service and compact, featureless, tiled rooms with struggling
a/c. If every other hotel in town is full, there's a go od ch ance
you can still find a bed at this cheapie. Wi-fi extra. €55
Oyasamaïd 2313 Route de la Madeleine T 594 315 684,
W oyasamaid.com. The four spacious tiled rooms at this
delightfully friendly four-bed family pension may be
simple but boast nice touches, such as Jacuzzi bathtubs,
microwaves, wi-fi on the patio and swimming pool for
guest use. The only drawback is t he l location - about 4km
south of the centre. Meals extra. €60

ARRIVAL AND INFORMATION
By plane Félix Eboué International Airport ( W www
.guyane.cci.fr/fr/aeroport) is in Matoury, 17km south of
Cayenne. Taxis to Cayenne cost €30-35.
Destinations Air France ( W airfrance.com) has regular
flights to Paris, Guadeloupe and Martinique; Air Caraibes
( W aircaraibes.com) flies to Brazil and France and connects
French Guiana with Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe and
the Dominican Republic; Surinam Airways ( W slm.nl)
connects Cayenne to Paramaribo twice weekly. Air Guyane
( W airguyane.com) provides domestic services to Maripa-
soula, Saül and St Laurent du Maroni.
By bus TIG buses arrive at the Cayenne bus station ( gare
routière ) opposite Canal Laussat. For frequency and prices

Destinations Kaw (bus #15; 1hr 50min); Kourou (bus
#5A/5B; 1hr 15min); Matoury (bus #15/15R; 45min);
Rémire Montjoly (bus #11B; 45min); Roura (bus #15/15R;
40-50min); Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock via Régina
(bus #17 to Regina, 1hr 30min; then bus #18 to Saint
Georges, 1hr); Saint Laurent du Maroni via Iracoubo
(bus #9 to Iracoubo, 1hr 30min; then bus #3 to St Laurent,
1hr 40min).

EATING
Self-caterers will find fresh produce at the market, fresh
bread in the boulangerie next to the market, and pretty
much everything else at the enormous Carrefour and
Geant supermarkets on the southern approach to town.
In the centre, there are small shops with limited choice.
Many restaurants are closed on Sun.
Crêp In 5 Rue Lieutenant Becker. It just wouldn't be
France without crêpes, and this little place serves up
a fine choice, along with a good selection of fresh fruit
juice, croque monsieurs and salads. Meals €8. Mon-Sat
8am-8pm.
GETTING AROUND
By bus SMTC, 2682 Route de la Madeleine ( T 594 254
928), runs a small network of local buses around Cayenne
(Mon-Sat); call for details. Most of the buses leave from
Place du Coq near the market.
By taxi Taxis in Cayenne are metered; there's a taxi stand
just off the Place de Palmistres. Rates are around €1.75
to hire, plus €0.65/km (double on Sun and between 7pm
and 6am).
