ACCOMMODATION
Montañita has a huge amount of accommodation and
where you stay depends mainly on how much sleep you
want to get. You can find a basic room for $5-7/person,
but bear in mind the centre is often very noisy and at
weekends partying continues until after dawn. The north
end is quieter with the best-quality mid-range accommo-
dation. Prices double on high season weekends and it's
hard to find a room in the centre. You can negotiate prices
in low season.

MONTAÑITA
Perhaps there should be a sign at the
entrance to MONTAÑITA that reads:
“You are now leaving Ecuador”. Such is
the international vibe that you could be
anywhere. At first sight, the town feels
like countless backpacker havens, but
whether you love it or hate it, you can't
deny the place's infectious energy. The
surfing contingent has been joined in
recent years by hippies and partygoers,
making it the coast's most buzzing resort
for budget travellers. Many people stay
for months, while others get out after
a couple of excessive nights - if you're
seeking a relaxing beach break, go
elsewhere. Surfers can enjoy rideable
breaks most of the year, frequently
2-3m on good days. It's not the best
place to learn but there are plenty of
experienced teachers. There's a renowned
international surf competition around
Carnaval (Feb/March).
ARRIVAL
By bus The bus stop is a couple of blocks inland from
the beach on the corner of Rocafuerte. Comfortable CLP
buses leave Guayaquil at 5am, 1pm and 5pm (3hr 30min).
If you can't catch one of these, take a bus from Guayaquil to
Salinas (hourly; daytime only) and ask the driver to drop
you at Santa Elena (1hr) to catch a connection. Buses north
to Puerto Lopez pass hourly (1hr). For Quito, go to Manta
or Puerto Lopez and change.
