the tapestry stores. About 6km from
Salasaca is
Pelileo
, with surely more
cut-price jeans per square metre than
anywhere in South America. To visit
Pelileo and Salasaca, hop off the bus
from Ambato to Baños. There are several
buses per hour.
idyllic destination. There are four sets
of public baths around town and many
of the better hotels have their own,
although they don't draw on volcanic
spring water. Be aware that Baños is
only 8km from the active
Volcán
Tungurahua
(see p.596), which has been
erupting regularly for the past decade.
Luckily, the crater is on the opposite
side to the town and Baños has been
relatively unaffected.

BAÑOS, TUNGURAHUA
Even if you're only in Ecuador for
a short time,
BAÑOS
is one place you
shouldn't miss. With an ideally warm
climate, a stunning location in a verdant
valley surrounded by steep hills,
an excellent choice of hotels and
restaurants, great walking and adventure
sports, plus of course, the thermal
baths that give the town its name,
Baños is mainland Ecuador's most
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
In town, don't miss the
Basílica de
Nuestra Señora de Agua Santa
on the
main Ambato street. This massive church
is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, credited
with several miracles including saving
the town from Tungurahua's eruption in
1773. The building is spectacular when
lit up at night, dominating the town's
skyline. Inside the church are ten huge
