GETTING AROUND
possible check the bus you're going to
travel on before buying. For longer bus
rides at peak periods, buy tickets in
advance. Avoid bus travel at night if
possible as crime is more common. Also
note that pickpocketing is rife on public
buses, especially popular tourist routes
out of Quito. Never stow valuables in your
bag above your head or under your seat
- always keep them on you.
BY BUS
Ecuador's cheap buses are the preferred
form of public transport, reaching just
about everywhere there's a road. he
Panamericana forms the backbone, linking
all major highland towns. The government
has poured investment into the roads,
which have improved markedly recently.
However, poor driving conditions,
particularly in the rainy season, often result
in delays ; the worst roads tend to be in
Esmeraldas and the Oriente.
Public buses are typically about $1-1.50
per hour of travel, but quality varies so if
