Indigenous cultures - including the
Tayrona, Calima, Muisca, Quimbaya, Nariño and others -
live scattered across the country.
700 AD
The Tayrona build the Ciudad Perdida - their largest
city.
1499
Alonso de Ojeda sets foot at Cabo de la Vela.
1525
Rodrigo de Bastidas establishes the first Spanish
settlement in Santa Marta, kicking off the hunt for El Dorado.
1533
The Spanish found Cartagena.
1537-38
Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de
Quesada wrests power (and staggering amounts of gold
and emeralds) from the native Chibchas and founds Santa
Fe de Bogotá, now known simply as Bogotá.
1717
The Spanish consolidate their colonial holdings,
creating the viceroyalty of Nueva Granada from the land
now occupied by the independent nations of Colombia,
Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.
1819
Simón de Bolívar overthrows Spanish rule and founds
Gran Colombia, comprised of Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela
and Panama. He becomes its first president, thus fulfilling
his desire for a united, independent South America.
