In-Depth Information
Towards the end of the nineteenth
century, at the height of the rubber
boom, architects were summoned from
Europe to redesign the city, which
rapidly acquired a Western feel - broad
Parisian-style avenues were laid down,
interspersed with Italian piazzas centred
on splendid fountains. Innovative
Manaus was one of the first cities in
Brazil to have electricity, trolley
buses and sewage systems. However,
by 1914 the rubber market was
collapsing fast, leaving the city to
slumber in past glories for much of
the twentieth century. Today, however,
Manaus is thriving again: an aggressive
commercial and industrial centre for
an enormous region.
