Belém prospered following the rubber
boom at the end of the nineteenth
century but suffered a disastrous decline
after the crash of 1914 - it kept afloat,
just about, on the back of brazil nuts
and the lumber industry. Nowadays, it
remains the economic centre of northern
Brazil, and the chief port for the Amazon.
It is also a remarkably attractive place,
with a fine colonial centre.
