ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By plane Recife's modern Aeroporto Internacional dos
Guararapes ( T 81 3322 4353, W infraero.gov.br) is only
11km from the city centre, at the far end of Boa Viagem;
TAM and Gol connect it with the rest of the country.
From the airport You can buy a fixed-price voucher for an
airport taxi from the COOPSETA desk at arrivals ( T 81 3462
1584; ten percent discount for ISIC members). Taxis to Boa
Viagem cost R$17, to Santo Antônio R$40 and to Olinda
R$63 (R$29, R$48 and R$70 respectively after 10pm).
For Boa Viagem hotels, take either the a/c bus #042 from
outside the airport (every 20min, 5am-11.55pm; R$2.60),
or bus #040 (every 20min, 5am-11.55pm; R$2.15) from
nearby Praça Ministro Salgado Filho. For Boa Vista, take
bus #163 (every 20min, 5am-11pm; R$2.15) from the
same Praça; it terminates on Av Conde da Boa Vista, near
Hotel Central (see p.293). Another option if you're staying
in Boa Vista is to take the overland train, the Metrô
(5am-11pm; R$1.60; W metrorec.com.br) from the airport
to the Estaçâo Central terminal (“Recife”), and take a taxi
(R$10-15) from there. For Olinda, take bus #040 or #042
to Praça de Boa Viagem, and change for bus #910 (every
20-40min, 4am-9.30pm; R$3.25) to Praça do Carmo, just
by Olinda's main post o ce. Alternatively, take the Metrô
to Estaçâo Central and either bus #983 or #993 from there.
Destinations Fortaleza (11-12 daily; 1hr 15min-1hr
30min); Rio (26-32 daily; 5hr 20min-7hr 50min); Salvador
(7-10 daily; 1hr 10min-1hr 20min); São Paulo (11-15 daily;
3hr-3hr 30min).
By bus The rodoviária or Terminal Integrado de
Passagerios (TIP) is about 14km from the centre of town
at Rodovia 232, Km15, Coqueiral ( T 81 3452 1103). From
here the Metrô (R$1.60) whisks you through various
favelas to Estação Central. For Boa Viagem, take any of the
buses from Rua Cais de Santa Rita (see below). For Olinda
take #983 from nearby Rua do Sol to Praça do Carmo.
Alternatively, a taxi from outside Estaçâo Central should
cost around R$30 for the 15min journey.
Destinations Guanabara ( W expressoguanabara.com.br)
serves Fortaleza; Penha ( W vendas.nspenha.com.br) serves
Salvador; and São Geraldo ( W saogeraldo.com.br) serves
Rio and São Paulo. Fortaleza (3 daily; 12hr); Rio (2 daily;
38hr); São Paulo (1 daily; 42hr); Salvador (1 daily; 12hr).

GETTING AROUND
By bus Most city buses originate and terminate on the
central island of Santo Antônio, on Rua Cais de Santa Rita.
They range in price from R$2.15 to R$3.25. To get from
the city centre to Boa Viagem, take either bus #042,
#039, #032 or #071. For up-to-date timetables see
