Two churches and Aleijadinho
Arguably the most beautiful church in
Ouro Preto, the Igreja de São Francisco
de Assis (Tues-Sun 8.30am-noon &
12.30-5pm; R$6, including entry to
the Museu Aleijadinho), east of Praça
Tiradentes, is one of the most important
works of Aleijadinho (see box, p.267).
The exterior was entirely sculpted by the
great master himself and the ceilings
decorated by his partner Athayde. The
Museu Aleijadinho (Tues-Sat 8.30am-
noon & 1.30-5pm, Sun noon-5pm),
containing many more beautiful works,
is located in the Igreja Matriz de N.S. da

Conceição . The church was designed by
his father and also houses Aleijadinho's
simple tomb.

Mina do Chico-Rei
Close to the Igreja Matriz de N.S. da
Conceição, at Rua Dom Silvério 108, is
the Mina do Chico-Rei (daily 8am-5pm;
R$10). The abandoned mine has
claustrophobic tunnels to explore, and
gives a good sense of the scale of the local
mining operations (this was only a small
mine). It's also an interesting place to
learn more about Chico-Rei (“Little
King”) himself, a legendary figure said to
