GAY AND LESBIAN

lesbian and sympathizers”) with clubbers of all
persuasions hanging out (Fosfobox and Zero Zero listed
above, for example). Much action takes place around
Rua Farme de Amoedo in Ipanema - ask at gay bar
Bofetada about circuit parties held all over the city.
Gay Pride takes place in Copacabana each September;
the wildest weekend on the Gay Rio calendar. For up-to-

SAMBA
From September to February the ultimate highlight of Rio's nightlife is a visit to a samba
school , when the emphasis is as much on raising funds for their extravagant Carnaval parade
(see p.237) as it is on perfecting routines. Expect drummers and dancers en masse, and
thousands of hyped-up revellers. There are many schools, of which a few are listed here; each
has its own weekly programme. Check the websites and keep your ear to the ground.
SAMBA SCHOOLS
Beija-Flor Rua Pracinha Wallace Paes Leme 1652,
Nilopolis T 21 2253 2860, W beija-flor.com.br. Carnaval

Mangueira Rua Visconde de Niterói 1072, Mangueira
T 21 2567 4637, W mangueira.com.br. Probably the
most famous and largest school; weekend events
attract many tour groups - so while fun, nights out
here can sometimes lack a traditional feel.
Portela Rua Clara Nunes 81, Madureira T 21 3390
0471, W gresportela.com.br. Thought of as a highly
traditional school, with feijoadas (usually first Sat of
the month) with samba a city highlight.
