The Catedral and Iglesia de
San Miguel
Sucre's sixteenth-century Catedral is
situated on Plaza 25 de Mayo and is
open on Sundays only; next door is the
Museo de la Catedral (Calle Nicolás
Ortiz 61; Mon-Sat 10am-noon &
3-5pm, Sat 10am-noon; B$20), which
has a wonderful collection of important
religious relics.
Half a block northwest of Plaza 25 de
Mayo along Calle Arenales, the modest
whitewashed Baroque facade of the
Iglesia de San Miguel (sporadic opening
hours; best to visit during Sunday Mass
between 6.30pm and 8pm), completed
in 1621, conceals one of the most lavish
church interiors in Sucre, with glorious
carved Baroque altarpieces covered in
gold leaf and an exquisite panelled
Mudéjar ceiling.
Museo de Arte Indígena
The fascinating Museo de Arte Indígena
(Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 2.30-6.30pm; Sat
9.30am-noon & 2-6pm; B$22 including
tours; W asur.org.bo/en/museum), at Pasaje
Iturricha 314 opposite Hotel Kolping in
the Zona Recoleta, is dedicated to the
distinctive weavings of two local Quechua-
speaking indigenous groups, the Jalq'a
and the Tarabuqueños, and provides an
excellent insight into a distinctly Andean
artistic expression.
Museo Universitario Charcas
On Bolívar, at Dalence, is the rambling but
worthwhile Museo Universitario Charcas
(Mon-Fri 8.30am-noon & 2.30-6pm,
Sat 9am-noon & 3-6pm; B$15), housed
in a delightful seventeenth-century
mansion. It is really four museums in one,
combining the university's archeological,
