the beautiful and remote landscapes
of the far southwest. In its heyday,
the city was Bolivia's main gateway to
the outside world and a symbol of
modernity and industrial progress.
Today, its streets are lined with a
collection of shabby, tin-roofed houses
and semi-abandoned railway yards
filled with the decaying skeletons of
redundant trains. A small town, it holds
everything you might need within
a few blocks; the effective centre is the
nineteenth-century clock tower at the
intersection of Avenidas Arce and Potosí.
That Uyuni hasn't become a ghost town
is due to the ever-growing number of
travellers who come here to visit the
spectacular scenery of the Salar de Uyuni
and the Reserva de Fauna Andina
Eduardo Avaroa , which are usually
visited together on a three-day tour.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By plane The airport opened in 2011. Between them,
Amaszonas and TAM (who both have o ces in town)
run between one and three daily direct flights to La Paz,
with onward connections to Sucre, Tarija, Santa Cruz,
Rurrenabaque and Cusco.

DIRECTORY
Banks and exchange The Banco Nacional de Bolivia on
Junín changes cash and travellers' cheques, or try Casa
Fernandez on Padilla between Bolívar and Matos. Several
shops along Bolívar change US dollars. There are several
ATMs, including Banco de Crédito, on Bolívar and Sucre.
Cinema Cine Imperial on Padilla between Chuquisaca and
Nogales.
Internet There are lots in town, but try the second floor
of Koala Café , Ayacucho 5 (B$3/hr).
Pharmacy There's a late-night place on El Boulevard,
near the junction with Plaza 6 de Agosto.
Post o ce Correo Central, a block south of Plaza 10 de
Noviembre on Lanza, at Chuquisaca. Mon-Fri 8am-8pm,
Sat 8am-6pm, Sun 9am-noon.
