MORENO
Created in 1937, the
PARQUE NACIONAL
PERITO MORENO
covers over 11,500
square kilometres of windy Patagonian
steppe and stunning high-mountain
landscapes. Not to be confused with
the eponymous glacier (see p.142),
the national park is located just off
Ruta 40 towards the town of Gobernador
Gregores. The park is hard to get to
unless you have your own transport,
and you may find yourself alone among
the abundant wildlife, which includes
guanacos, flamingos and condors.
There are several enjoyable short hikes
(self-guided), which are not too
challenging. You'll need to register at
the park entrance (daily 8am-8pm; free)
before you set off.
