Although the decor is pretty dated and the walls a little thin,
this budget hotel is a decent choice. The compact r ooms are
clean and come with attached bathrooms and TVs. AR$350

ACCOMMODAT ION
Most accommodation is close to the centre of town and
within walking distance of the bus terminal (many hostels
will pick you up for free if you call ahead). Prices drop
greatly outside the January to March high season. Rates
include breakfast unless stated otherwise.
EATING AND DRINKING
Ambigú Roca & Roque Sáenz Peña T 0280 447 2541,
W ambiguresto.com.ar. The menu at this bustling café-
restaurant features everything from steaks and pastas to
curries and stir-fries, with most mains starting at around
AR$40. Ambigú is also popular for its pizzas - the large
ones are more than enough for two people. Daily noon-
2pm & 8pm-midnight.
Los Colonos Roca & A. Storni T 0280 445 8486. Located
in the hull of a large wooden ship on the main street, this
place is just plain fun. The house speciality is seafood;
grilled, baked or fried fish goes for around AR$40-50,
while the arroz con mariscos (a soupy paella) is big enough
for two. Daily noon-3pm & 7.30pm-midnight.
Mr Jones 9 de Julio 116 T 0280 447 5368. A buzzing pub-
restaurant, popular with locals and young gringos alike.
Most of the diners - who fill up the wooden benches and
spill out onto the streetside tables - are here for a beer
(from around AR$15) and a picada (cold meat and cheese
platters). Mon-Sat 6pm-1/2am.
Ì Quemehuencho Churreria Roque Sáenz Peña 212
T 0280 15 440 4016. Churros stuffed with every
imaginable filling from the usual dulce de leche to home-
made jams. This is also a great place for the mate novice,
as the waiters will explain the different varieties and help
you brew the drink. Mon-Fri 8am-noon & 4.30-8pm, Sat
& Sun 4.30-8pm.
Vesta Patagonia Punta Cuevas T 0280 447 0766,
W vestarestaurant.com.ar. The best time to come here is
at sunset, as the restaurant is located at Punta Cuevas,
close to the spot where the Welsh first landed in Patagonia.
Grab a drink (from AR$10-15) and a seat on the terrace
and enjoy the view. Daily noon-midnight/1am.
HOSTELS AND CAMPSITES
ACA Complejo Turístico Punta Cuevas Punta Cuevas

complex has camping spots (tents provided), simple
rooms and self-contained apartments sui table f or groups.

hostel's dorms are not the most stylish but the mattresses
are wonderful; private rooms with shared bathrooms are
also available. Guests have kitc hen acc ess, and t ours and bike

W elgualicho.com.ar. The best hostel in town, El Gualicho
has four-, six- and eight-bed dorms, comfortable private
rooms, a sociable lounge, a communal kitchen and
barbecue area, and a pleasant garden. The friendly staff
can ar range tou rs, divin g trips and bike rental. Dorms

Posada del Catalejo Mitre 446 T 0280 447 5224,
W posadadelcatalejo.com.ar. A cheerful B&B-type hostel
close to the beach and the town centre. The large, brightly
painted dorms and private rooms have crisp white sheets and
a lovely home-from-home feel . The fir eplace in the loun ge is

four- to eight-bed dorms and en-suite rooms with TVs,

hostel.com. This hostel may not be the prettiest, but it's
friendly, close to the beach and has a nice garden out back.

NIGHTLIFE
La Frontera 9 de Julio 254 T 0280 447 2232. Puerto
Madryn's most popular club, La Frontera's focus is on dance
and electro music. It's only open on the weekends, and
unless you want the place to yourself, don't even think
about getting here before 2am. Fri & Sat midnight-5am.
Margarita Roque Sáenz Peña 15 T 0280 447 0885. Visit
this pub to enjoy some good (and often live) music and rub
shoulders with the locals over a few drinks (from AR$15).
Also serves fairly pricey but tasty snacks and meals. Happy
hour 7.30-9pm. Mon-Sat 7.30pm-2/3am.
