several key organic farming bodies, such as India's first organic certifi-
cation organization, are now based in Kerala. The state's contemporary
organic farming movement is very much a Polanyian countermovement
—
a reaction by farmers, activists, consumers, and policy makers to prob-
lems in India's farming sector and globalized agriculture. Organic farm-
ing, and the rejection of chemical inputs that must be purchased, have the
potential to transform Indian agriculture once again and take farmers off
the chemical treadmill.
