modity prices continue to fluctuate unpredictably, protecting the state's
economy and environment will remain a challenge for all of Kerala's par-
ties.56 The example of Syrian Christian organic farmers in Wayanad also
illustrates the fact that the development of alternative agricultural pro-
duction in India is and will be an uneven process, full of challenges and
contestation between diverse communities.
The complexities that the people of Kerala face in trying to figure out
the future of agriculture aren't unique. Agriculture occupies a complex
position in our globalized society, and future changes in this realm will re-
quire cooperation and collaboration between various stakeholders. These
complexities and disagreements do not have to paralyze advocates inter-
ested in reforming industrial agriculture, though. The heterogeneity of
Kerala's organic farming movement and the debates in the state confirm
that organic agriculture can take on many forms, and that the trajectory
of alternative agriculture movements is not necessarily already writen in
stone. I find this to be hopeful.
