Our next stop included panchagavayya drums, the contents of which
were being applied to the rice fields as well. Thanal staff, familiar in creat-
ing these mixtures, had assisted in training farmers how to make the dual
fertilizer- pesticide concoction. Vermicompost and panchagavayya were
the main agricultural inputs in the fields and gardens of this pilot project.
To combat heat and drought, the Biodiversity Board had also assisted
in the construction of a few traditional rainwater- harvesting kokkarni,
which doted the landscape. The Biodiversity Board had decided to sub-
sidize kokkarni construction after drought conditions destroyed six acres
of paddy fields in 2009. Staff found that paddy fields near existing sources
of water and kokkarni fared beter during the drought.8 One newspaper
