Database Reference
In-Depth Information
are some inherent problems with it, such as having to pay vendors additional vendor license
fees. To solve these problems, Oracle offers a product called Oracle Secure Backup.
In this section, we will introduce you to Oracle Secure Backup (OSB) and provide you
with the information you need to answer the questions you will find on your OCP exam with
respect to Oracle Secure Backup. Please note that Oracle Secure Backup has a lot of features
and details that we will not cover in this topic. Otherwise, the topic would probably have to
be dedicated to OSB. If you want more detailed information on OSB beyond what you will
need for the Oracle OCP exam, we suggest a topic coauthored by one of us, Robert Freeman,
with Matthew Hart, called Oracle RMAN 11 g Backup and Recovery . It contains informa-
tion on OSB and RMAN well beyond what is required for your OCP exam.
You might consider that reading this topic and passing your OCP exam will
grant you your bachelor's degree. Reading the Oracle Database 11 g Backup
and Recovery handbook is something like getting your master's in Oracle
Database backup studies. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
In this section, we will discuss the following:
What is OSB?
How does OSB interface with RMAN?
The OSB architecture
Installing and configuring OSB
What Is OSB?
• OSB is a complete tape backup solution provided by Oracle. Previously, if you wanted
to back up a database to a vendor tape system, you needed to interface with the vendor
libraries. This additional layer of abstraction was often a cause of frustration and confusion
because it could be difficult to set up and configure. You were also dependent on the vendor
to correctly write their interface into the Oracle SBT media interface.
• OSB offers an all-in-one solution, providing a tape backup management solution that is
centralized and enterprise ready.
• OSB comes in two lavors. The irst is the standard OSB, and the second is called
OSB-XE. OSB-XE is a limited product that is bundled with Oracle Database and provides
a basic version of this product that is limited to a single tape device. OSB-XE does not
require any license other than the Oracle Database license to operate legally.
• The full-ledged OSB enterprise version requires a license and comes with a number of
features, including the following:
Support for many different operating systems
Integration with Oracle Enterprise Manager
