TABleĀ 6.3 Components of the Fault Diagnosability Framework
Component
Purpose
ADR
The ADR is a file-based repository. The ADR was covered earlier
in this chapter.
Alert log
The alert log is a text-based file, and there is also an XML-
based file that contains various database messages that indi-
cate errors, information on database events, and other output
used for database administration and problem diagnosis.
Trac e f files
Each server process writes to a trace file, which is a
diagnostic file. Trace files are stored in the ADR. SQL Tracing
also creates trace files.
Dump files
Diagnostic files that are used to troubleshoot database prob-
lems. These are stored in the ADR.
Core files
Diagnostic files that are used to troubleshoot database prob-
lems. These are stored in the ADR.
Other ADR content
Additional files that are stored in the ADR include health monitor
reports, data repair records, SQL test cases, incident packages,
and more.
Enterprise Manager Sup-
port Workbench (EMSW)
Contained in Oracle Enterprise Manager, the Support Workbench
provides the ability to investigate and report on problems. Some
problems can be repaired with the Support Workbench. The Sup-
port Workbench automates much of the work of managing the
Fault Diagnosability Framework.
ADRCI command-line
utility
An alternative to the Support Workbench, the ADRCI com-
mand-line utility provides a way to manually interact with and
manage the Fault Diagnosability Framework.
Enterprise Manager Support Workbench
We introduced you to the Enterprise Manager Support Workbench in the previous section.
This is a component of Oracle Enterprise Manager, and it simplifies managing the technology
associated with the Fault Diagnosability Framework. The EMSW is an easy-to-use graphical
interface that provides the ability to manage the AWR repository, problems, incidents, and
related support tickets.
Normally, we try to provide exercises within our topics to familiarize you with the topics.
However, the various tutorials that you would need to complete to fully understand the OEM
Support Workbench and other components would make the page count of this topic way too
high (and it's pretty hefty as it is now).
