As you see, the ADR is a complex set of directory structures that are specific to individ-
ual technology components such as the database, the listener, and so on. Each technology
component then has its own ADR HOME directory. This ADR_HOME directory, then, is a logical
separation of the ADR-related files, by technology.
For example, the database ADR_HOME will be something like DIAGNOSTIC_DEST/diag/
rdbms . From this directory, each database and each database instance will have its own
unique ADR home directory. In certain cases you will need to set the ADR_HOME directory
when working with ADR files. We will demonstrate how to do that shortly.
The main time you will need to be concerned about what ADR HOME you are in is if you
are using the ADRCI interface with ADR, which we will discuss later in this chapter. The
only other time you will probably need to be concerned about it is when you take your
OCP exam! We will talk more about the ADR_HOME directory shortly when we discuss the
ADRCI command-line interface.
Problems and Incidents
Recall that one of the jobs of the FDI is to automatically detect critical database faults, such
as ORA-0600 errors. When these faults are detected, the database will collect all of the
trace files and other information related to the error. It will take all of this information and
pack it into a compressed archive file and store that file in the ADR. (As an aside, we have
no idea if the FDI ships these files to the NSA and if the NSA shares them with the CIA or
MI5; certainly you can choose to share them with ORCL if you like.)
