In-Depth Information
The Oracle Database Fault Diagnostic Framework (and the associated Automatic
Diagnostic Workflow) was introduced in Oracle Database 11 g and has been improved
upon with the advent of Oracle Database 12 c . In this section, we will discuss the Oracle
Database Fault Diagnostic Framework as follows:

Overview of the Oracle Database Fault
Diagnostic Framework
The purpose of the Oracle Database Fault Diagnostic Framework is to make it easier for
database problems to be captured when they occur. Additionally, the Framework will collect
diagnostic data related to problems that occur in the database. This information is packaged
into a single file to be sent to Oracle Support. This relieves the DBA of the tedious work of
collecting this diagnostic information themselves.
Oracle describes the goals of the Fault Diagnostic Framework as follows:
First-failure diagnosis
Problem prevention
Limiting damage and interruptions after a problem is detected
Reducing problem diagnostic time
Reducing problem resolution time
Simplifying customer interaction with Oracle Support
These goals, when implemented in the enterprise, provide many benefits including the
following:
Automated capture of diagnostic information when a failure occurs. This can save the
DBA tremendous amounts of time.
Quick problem resolution, reducing the time it takes to address problems and thus
reducing downtime and outages.
Integration with other Oracle Database technologies and with My Oracle Support
(MOS) from Enterprise Manager. This streamlines the problem-resolution workflow
and reduces the overall time to resolve a problem.
A suite of proactive diagnostic health checks that can also be run on demand. These
health checks can be run to detect problems before they become a serious issue impact-
ing the database. Also, these health checks can be run when problems occur to help
diagnose and provide potential resolutions to the problem.
The Fault Diagnosability Framework is supported by an underlying infrastructure called
the Fault Diagnosability Infrastructure (the FDI—No need to fear; the FDI is not collecting
