All this begs the question, is this is a conscious decision on the part of the designer or is an intuitively
created and successful design always going to follow the golden ratio? I don't think the answer actually mat-
ters. Some artists may well have an instinctual eye for pleasing proportions. Others (such as myself) need to
learn from the masters and apply the techniques that appeared to guide their work. By being aware that the
golden rectangle exists and represents a powerful design tool, we can exploit it in our own work.
