Environmental Leadership Training—Effects
on Students' Future Environmental Leadership

Abstract This topic is based on the experience of developing and applying envi-
ronmental leadership education and training at Tohoku University, where learners
are masters and doctorate researchers in sciences, engineering and humanities. This
topic's focus is on a range of issues in energy and resources, but is just one part of
the wider curriculum outlined in Chap. 1 aiming to strengthen motivation and pro-
vide the necessary knowledge and personal skills to support environmental leader-
ship in the student's future workplace. This final chapter thus assesses how far we
have achieved that role based on student feedback, their decisions in selection of
future jobs, and limited feedback from their employment after graduating. This is
set against a theoretical framework of leadership in sustainable development.

Introduction
This topic addresses a range of subjects related to energy and resources which are
included in the environmental leadership training program available at Tohoku Uni-
versity for Masters and Doctorate researchers. As described in Chap. 1, the ELTP
curriculum provides knowledge (environmental sustainability, sustainable business,
water and urban environments etc.), strengthens personal skills in an international
framework (Environmental Leader Training and International Environmental Lead-
er Symposia), and offers practical experience (through fieldwork and internships) to
