There are a range of techniques for extracting geothermal energy related to the
depths and temperature and nature of the resources involved. Figure 6.5 provides a
broad classification of underground heat utilization methods according to their ap-
proximate ranges of depth and temperature. The types of underground heat utilized
to date include geothermal heat pumps, district heating systems, and steam-based
