Archaeology in the spring). If you are interested in forensic anthropology, the major confer-
ence would be the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), held every February.
Smaller regional conferences that emphasize forensic anthropology are held every year:
Mountain, Swamp, and Beach Forensic Anthropologists for the Southeastern United States,
the Northeast Forensic Anthropology Association for the Northeastern United States, the
Midwest Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology Association for the Midwestern United
States, and the Mountain Desert and Coastal Forensic Anthropologists for the Western United
States. Regional meetings are more intimate and informal and present a good opportunity
for presenting your work without the pressure of a national or international conference.
The annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association is held every fall, and does
have a biological anthropology section. See Tabl e 17. 4 . You can find information
regarding any of these conferences (or others not listed d forexample,severalothercoun-
tries have their own biological anthropology association and respective conference) by
going online and searching for the respective association's website. You should seriously
consider becoming a student member of the AAPA and any other association that covers
the topic in which you have the most interest.
You should peruse the abstracts of papers from the past two or so years that have been
presented at the conference at which you wish to present (these proceedings will usually
be online). This will give you an idea of whether or not your study is thematically appropriate
for that particular conference, and on what topics other researchers in the field are currently
working. This will narrow down your decision considerably. AAPA occasionally holds
a special poster symposium dedicated to studies by undergraduates, and many associations
