ScienceDirect and JSTOR are two other databases that contain back issues of multiple
journals in anthropology and some current issues, as well as certain topics. One new database
that is able to search all search engines and your library catalog simultaneously is called
Summon
Scholar, which also has a citation search feature
and can search for free reprints online, and PubMed , which contains references relevant to
biology or medicine. If a study received funding from the National Institutes of Health,
PubMed will have the article available as a free download. Scientific WebPlus , part of
Web of Knowledge, is also available freely and searches the general Internet for science
topics, which may be useful particularly if you need to know what general information is
available for topics such as evolution. Truly comprehensive searches will include disserta-
tions and theses covering the topic of interest. Dissertation Abstracts International, managed
by ProQuest , has thousands of thesis and dissertation abstracts from North America.
Depending on how comprehensive your scope is, a simple Google search can also assist as
the results may include unpublished sources such as presentations or posters. Table 17.1 lists
several databases that will provide a good starting point for your search.
