In-Depth Information
If you self-install DSL, you will normally install small devices called microfilters to block the DSL
signal from reaching telephones, answering machines, and similar devices. These devices might fit
behind the faceplate of the wall outlet used for DSL service or the inline between the phone,
answering machine, or fax machine and the wall outlet (see Figure 16.3 ).
Figure 16.3. Two types of DSL self-installations—one featuring a standalone splitter and
separate microfilter, the other with a splitter and microfilter integrated into a wall jack.
Tip
If you have a security system attached to your telephone line, watch out for problems if you
select DSL as your preferred broadband access method. Security systems are often designed to
seize the line, interrupting a phone call in progress to send an alarm to the security company.
This feature may not work with normal microfilters. Contact your DSL or security system
provider to see whether a special filter is required.
