Peach Trees Trained to a Perpendicular-V System
ABOVE: Each tree has two scaffold branches perpendicular to the row.
Note how the scaffold branches are headed back occasionally during es-
tablishment to develop the shape. Use thinning cuts to develop renewal
fruiting wood along each scaffold branch.
Perpendicular-V peach orchards typically have 375 to 580 trees per acre,
and trees are spaced 5 to 7 feet apart in rows that are 16 to 20 feet apart.
In areas with vigorous tree growth, unless space in your orchard is limited
and you are experienced in growing peaches and nectarines, I recommend
a spacing of 6 feet apart in rows 18 feet apart. In areas with cold winters
and where tree vigor is limited, you can space peach and nectarine trees as
