ABOVE: Use thinning cuts to keep the canopy open and develop new fruit-
ing wood. Head back branches that become too long or are half the trunk
diameter or more at that height. Keep branches horizontal. Maintain tree
height by thinning to a weak lateral.
Repeat these procedures for the new leader during the first and subsequent
dormant prunings. You will not need to head back the leader again unless
it grows to be more than about 32 inches long. Your goal is to develop a
