HOW TO PRUNE
1. Remove all diseased and dead wood.
2. Remove branches that rub against or cross each other.
3. Remove suckers (shoots growing from the ground or bottom of
the trunk).
4. Remove water sprouts, but do not denude exposed limbs on
older trees.
5. Remove multiple trunks unless they are part of the training sys-
tem.
6. Now look at the tree. Decide if there are branches that need to be
removed to:
▪ Maintain a central or modified central leader
▪ Form a vase or open center shape
▪ Develop a particular shape
▪ Correct narrow branch angles
▪ Remove inwardly growing branches
▪ Remove weak, dangling limbs
Hand shears. Anvil-type pruners are suited for stems that are up to about
inch in diameter, but they tend to crush stems if they are not very sharp,

and they require more force than do bypass or scissor types.
