In-Depth Information
(ladybugs), green lacewings, plant bugs, minute pirate bugs, earwigs, and
parasitic wasps. It is very important to maintain healthy and abundant pop-
ulations of these beneficial insects in the orchard. However, predator and
parasite populations typically build too slowly in the spring to provide the
control that is necessary to prevent large summer populations of psylla. In-
stead, you can make dormant applications of lime sulfur 30 days or more
before bud swell, followed by an application of horticultural oil during bud
swell through green tip to very effectively reduce psylla populations. Apply-
ing Surround pre- and postbloom, as well as azadirachtin products during
and after bloom, should provide good control of this pest, provided you have
an effective population of predators and parasites. You may increase the ef-
fectiveness of azadirachtin by tank-mixing it with summer-weight horticul-
tural oil. Be careful, however, because some pear cultivars can be damaged
by azadirachtin products.
