Bordeaux Formulations
Wear eye protection and a dust mask when preparing and applying
Bordeaux mixes, and wear protective clothing during spray applications be-
cause the material stains badly. Stock solutions of copper sulfate and hy-
drated lime are toxic and must be kept away from children. See table10.1
for the amounts to use. Prepared Bordeaux mixes are available from agri-
cultural suppliers and garden centers. While some fruit specialists consider
them inferior to preparations made from scratch, they can be easier and
safer to use, particularly for home and market orchards.
Bordeaux sprays, whether they are made from dry ingredients or stock
solutions, deteriorate rapidly, so make up only enough to use within that day.
The materials in the mix settle quickly and require constant, vigorous agita-
tion in the spray tank. For commercial sprayers, equipment that uses bypass
agitation (pesticide solution recirculating into and out of the spray tank via
a pump) will probably not be sufficient and paddle mixers are recommended.
For handheld sprayers, vigorously shake the tank every few minutes during
applications.
When mixing large quantities of Bordeaux mix for mechanical sprayers,
fill the spray tank about one-third full of water, then begin adding the
