Root Diseases
Diseases present some of the greatest challenges to organic fruit growers
and are among the primary reasons much commercial fruit production is
centered in arid and semiarid regions of North America, where disease pres-
sures are relatively low. Nevertheless, improved fruit varieties, organic
pesticides, and cultural practices now make organic fruit production pos-
sible throughout North America.
We have discussed many of the disease control strategies available to or-
ganic growers. It is very important to select the right site if starting a new
orchard. Sites on gentle to moderate slopes above prevailing temperature in-
versions reduce chronic frost and freezing injuries that make fruit trees more
susceptible to stem cankers and other diseases than do sites with frequent
or severe frosts. The best orchard sites also allow heavy, moist air to drain
away from the orchard, reducing fungal and bacterial infections. Locating
your orchard on deep, well-drained soils reduces root diseases and physiolo-
gical disorders.
