from an annual alley crop of wheat, rye, or barley can reduce soil prob-
lems while improving access.
A third option is to plant rows of insectary crops within the orchard, spaced
about 50 feet apart. From a commercial standpoint, this reduces yields per
acre and can reduce profits. It might be possible for commercial fruit grow-
ers to recoup a return on the investment by planting herbal or ornament-
al cash crops within the insectary crop rows. Regardless of where you plant
the insectary crops, try to keep them within 50 feet of your fruit crops and
preferably closer.
