Loquat Varieties
Advance
Notes: The medium-sized to large, rounded to pear-shaped, yellow
fruits have white pulp and are sweet with excellent flavor and good
commercial quality. The skin is tough, an advantage when shipping the
fruits. Ripens in mid-season to late season. A naturally small tree
growing to about 5 feet high. One of the best and most popular loquats.
Highly resistant to pear blight. Requires cross-pollination ('Thales'
works well) and is a good pollinizer for other varieties.
Big Jim
Notes: The large to very large, orange fruits are pear-shaped and
have sweet, orange-yellow flesh. Ripens in mid-season. The trees are
vigorous, erect, and highly productive. Has performed well in southern
Louisiana. Requires cross-pollination.
Champagne
Notes: The medium-sized to large, pear-shaped, yellow fruits have
white flesh and a tough, astringent skin. The fruits are sweet and have
excellent flavor and quality. Ripens in mid-season to late season. One
of the best loquats. Requires cross-pollination.
Early Red
Notes: The medium-sized to large, orange fruits have orange flesh
with tough, astringent skins. The flesh is sweet, and flavor ranges from
