In-Depth Information
California growers prefer 'Winter Nelis' seedling rootstocks that have
been developed using 'Bartlett' pollen for pear decline resistance. Unfortu-
nately, these rootstocks are highly susceptible to fire blight and pear root
aphid and are quite susceptible to nematode damage.
'Angers Quince' and 'Provence Quince' provide dwarfing and resistance
to pear decline, pear root aphid, and nematodes, but they are quite suscept-
ible to fire blight and are highly susceptible to cold injury.
For very cold climates, seedling Pyrus ussuriensis rootstocks probably of-
fer the greatest chance of success, but they are highly susceptible to pear de-
cline, as are Pyrus serotina rootstocks. Pyrus calleryana rootstocks are very
susceptible to cold injury. 'Old Home' rootstocks are susceptible to root aph-
ids.
