In-Depth Information
gan (stigma) on flowers on one plant being pollinated with pollen from a
genetically different plant (different variety), usually of the same species.
Because of this, apples are referred to as “self-unfruitful” or “self-incompat-
ible,” depending on the nature of the incompatibility. The possible exception
is 'Yellow Transparent', a variety that has been reported to set crops reliably
when self-pollinated. In all other cases, you will need to plant at least two
compatible varieties within about 50 feet of each other or have two or more
compatible varieties grafted or budded onto a single rootstock. Some apple
varieties, including 'Jonathan', 'Rome Beauty', 'Oldenburg', 'Wealthy', 'Golden
Delicious', 'Grimes Golden', 'York', and 'Granny Smith', are partially self-fruit-
ful but still produce better and more reliable crops when cross-pollinated.
