variety may no longer be available. You can purchase rootstock trees
and bud or graft the old variety onto them, producing young trees in
whatever size you wish and growing the fruits you've enjoyed for years.
Plum curculio is primarily a pest in eastern North America, where it can
cause severe damage to tree fruits when not controlled. It was long con-
sidered a leading obstacle to commercial fruit production within its range.
The apple maggot's native range includes the Midwestern and eastern Un-
ited States and eastern Canada, although the pest is now also found in Cali-
fornia, Oregon, and Washington. Codling moth originated in Asia, but it is
now found in all apple growing regions in the world. Chapter 11 goes into

“VARIETY” VERSUS “CULTIVAR”
“Cultivar,” coined from “cultivated variety,” is a more correct term for
fruitcrops,andIwoulduseit,not“variety,”inaresearchjournalarticle.
“Cultivar”isspecificinthatitreferstoavegetativelypropagatedvariety
in which all individuals are genetically identical. “Variety” has several
meanings in botany and taxonomy. The term “variety” is generally used
by fruit tree nurseries and many orchardists and suits our purposes
for this topic. Variety (cultivar) names are shown with single quotation
marks; for example, 'Red Delicious' apple.
